From The Center to Sioux Falls Pride

Our organization transitioned in 2018 from our original name, The Center for Equality. Our work and mission as the Center for Equality inform our work and growth in this new chapter as Sioux Falls Pride.

The following is a letter written and distributed to the community by the Board of Directors during our transitional period.

Dear Community,

Since 2000, The Center for Equality has worked to protect and support the rights and well-being of LGBTQ South Dakotan’s and their families. Since 2018, we have been known as Sioux Falls Pride, and our mission has been to celebrate our diversity and shape a community to be more welcoming and supportive of LGBTQIA2S+ people.

In 2019, we saw a turning point in Sioux Falls: businesses throughout the city widely embraced LBGTQ pride by actively getting involved in the occasion. These businesses saw the importance and value of building a diverse and accepting city. As a result, Sioux Falls Pride moved beyond the park festival and could be felt across the entire city. We feel it’s important to build off this momentum to make Sioux Falls more than just a safe place for LGBTQ people, but a welcoming place.

We’re proud of what the Center for Equality has accomplished since its inception. Our deepest gratitude goes out to all current and past volunteers, board members, and allies who have worked tirelessly, endlessly, and selflessly to support and protect the rights and well-being of LGBTQ South Dakotans. We will all continue as advocates fighting for this same mission under a new name and focus – Sioux Falls Pride.

Sioux Falls Pride will continue to invest in opportunities supporting the LGBTQ+ community in ways that are sustainable.
