The New Center for Equality

Welcome! While we are excited about our new website, we are even more excited about other recent changes taking effect at The Center. You may not have heard of us before, or perhaps you have, but weren’t sure about what we did. We are about to change all that. In order for The Center to begin to flourish, changes had to be made from the inside out. First, we elected a new President, Justin Fuhs, along with other passionate and dedicated officials who want to make a difference for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Second, we added some fresh faces to our board of directors who are striving to create positive change. Third, we are becoming more active, involved, and organized to create a strong and respected non-profit organization.

With recent proposed anti-gay discriminatory legislation (which thankfully and rightfully failed), it is never clearer that there is a need for the voices of the LGBT community to be heard. We will not remain silent while there are those who wish to silence and mistreat others. The mission of The Center for Equality is to protect and support the rights and well being of LGBT South Dakotans and their families. We exist to expose and support them, and to educate the larger community on LGBT issues in order to make the Sioux metro area a friendly and peaceful place to live for all of its residents.

We have revamped our site with more resources on counseling, healthlegislature and more. The Center’s website is also the hub for Sioux Falls Pride and Sioux Falls AIDS Walk. In addition to those larger annual events, be sure to check out our events calender to see what else is happening in the community. Events range from movie showings that help fund CFE programs to group meetings with open discussions and support. If there is something more that you would like to see on our site, don’t hesitate to contact us and let us know.

We’ve heard it said before, that the greatest thing a gay person can do is to come out. It lets others know that you are not ashamed of who you are. American poet Robert Frost said, “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life; define yourself.” By coming out, it can change the perspective of someone who may not have met an openly gay person before. They see you for who you are, not a label.

We hope someday there will no longer be a Center for Equality. Specifically, that there will no longer be a need. That people who are gay, is a distinction no different from someone who prefers paper to plastic. Until then, we will press on and fight the good fight.

We value your support, recognition and acceptance. If you would like to contribute by getting involved, we are always accepting applications for volunteers. If you are unable to volunteer and would still like to show your support, we also accept donations. Every little bit helps and goes toward making Sioux Falls and the surrounding area a safer and better environment for the LGBT community.

Thank you,

The Center for Equality
